Studs Terkelさんが亡くなった。アメリカのジャーナリストで、日常を生きる市民のインタビューでアメリカの姿を描き出し、人の声を聞く天才だと言われた人です。初めて彼の本"Working"を読んだ時はNYに住んでいた。９１１があった後で、国家やテロという曖昧で不気味な概念ばかりが世の中を圧巻し、個人というもがまったく見えてこない社会状況にあって、「人」のみ焦点をあてた彼の本に相当救われた。有名／無名に関わらず、アメリカ中の様々な人が自分の仕事について語ったインタビュー集で、それぞれの生活、仕事にある物語をシンプルに丁寧に伝える様は、インタビューの天才、人の話を聞く天才と言われた彼のライフワークだった。彼の目線は常にストリートにあり、一般の人達の生活からぶれることはなかった。歴史には絶対に登場しない人達が嬉しかった瞬間、痛み、幸せとは、人生の悲劇／喜劇を語るのを読んで、アメリカ社会の歴史を少し勉強できたように思う。
「人の話を聞く天才」という言葉を聞いていて、Cittadellarteで考えていたことを思い出した。カルチャラルセオリスト（Cultural theorist）のPascal Gielenという人がレクチャーに来た時に、今のカルチャー産業、アートや芸術に関わる分野において、言葉の力、話す能力、テキストの力というものがどんどん重要になってきていているという話になった。例えばアーティストやキュレターという職についている人も黙々と自分の作品や展示を作るだけでなく、それを公共の場所で"トーク"という形式で発表することが求められている。自分のプロジェクトについて、過去の作品、書物、様々なリソースを参照できること、そしてそれを人前で、多くの場合英語で伝えることができること、それが仕事の一部になってきているという話だった。私たちのプログラムもそういう傾向をまさに反映していて、自分のプロジェクトをどうやってプレゼンするか、話し方などのレクチャーにかなりの時間が割かれていた。そして、ヨーロッパという地域性もあるかもしれないけど、論理的に理論整然と自分のプロジェクトを話す、初期のレクチャー漬けとの頃は特に、話して話して話すという日々だった。私も相当の話好きの議論好きだけど、それでも暫く言葉を発せずにコミュニケーションを取りたいと何度思ったことか。そういう日々が続いていた時に、マヌエラというイタリア出身の参加者と話していて、Cittadellarteでは「聞く」という行為が重要視されていないのではないかという問題提起があった。「University of Ideas（アイデアの大学）」なだけに、プログラムの参加者もスタッフもとにかく自分のアイデアを人に伝えることに必死になっていて、人の話を聞く、それも自分のアイデアを挟む機会を伺うために聞くのではなく、その人の考えを理解するために「聞く」ことがないのではないか。彼女曰く、「話す」行為は頭で行い、「聞く」行為はより身体を使う。身体を開くことで初めて人の話を聞く事ができる。そういう話を聞いていて、まさに自分のことだと思った。とにかく自分のアイデアを伝えることに一生懸命になるあまり、人の話を聞く体勢を忘れつつあるのではないか、身体を開くということを忘れつつあるのではないか。頭ばかりが肥大化し、身体性が置き去りにされている云々と普段話している割には、自分も同じことをしている。そして実験場と言われているところでも、頭優位の現状がある。
Studs Terkelさんの話からだいぶ脱線してしまったけれど、彼は身体を人に向かって開くことができる人だったのだろうと思う。惜しい人が死んでしまった。彼の本は日本語でも読めると思うので是非。

As widely reported in the US media, Studs Tarkel died at age 96. He was a great journalist, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and known as a genius of listening to ordinary people's stories. When I first read his book "Working," I lived in NY. It was right after 911 happened, all the strange, vague and scary words like nation, terrorism, and patriotism covered the city, and an individual face/story was oppressed. His book, all about individual stories, saved me at that time. Whether famous or non-famous, everyone in the book talks about his/her work and life through Studs brilliant yet simple writing. He always positioned himself with people' s life and tell their sad-happy-bad-good moments that never appear on historical books. Through his book, I learned about the US society little better.
His work and his talent as the best listener made me think about what I was thinking during the residency at Cittadellarte. When we had the lectures by Pascal Gielen, he was talking about a tendency that power of language/text and ability of talking (mostly English) have becoming more and more important in the culture industry. For example, artists and curators not only make their artworks and exhibitions but also have to talk about them in front of public. Partially due to the fact that artworks and exhibitions are more complicated now than ever, they need to be able to articulate their own works referencing past artworks and theories, which has become part of the job today. Our program at Cittadellarte, reflected by this trend, dedicated a lot of time to workshops/lectures about how to do presentations and how to talk about our own projects. Maybe this has to do with the character of European countries, but we talked, talked, discussed and articulated our thoughts, especially at the beginning of the residency when our days were packed with lectures and workshops. Even though I am from the country where articulating and being logical is not a first priority, I personally love to talk and discuss. But there were times I did not want to communicate with people through words. During that phase, I had a conversation with Manuela, an Italian participant, who pointed out that in UNIDEE, an act of listening was maybe missing. As the name, "University of Ideas" suggests, it's all about ideas and projects that we are really passionate about telling them, but not so eager to listening to others for the sake of understanding a person and his/her ideas, not for the sake of seeking a chance to insert our opinions. She said to me that an act of talking is more connected with a head, and an act of listening is more connected with a body. Listening requires us to open our bodies to others. I thought what she was talking about is basically about me. While criticizing our body is underestimated and organizing workshops related to that subject, I am leaving my body behind, for example, by not listening to others. And in Cittadellarte, a laboratory for new and experimental ideas, I think the imbalance between body and head exists. It's a difficult issue, but challenging to deal with at the same time.
Going back to Studs Terkel, he was a man who could open up his body and listen to people. Please check out his books.

[Note] 京都に戻ってきた/ Back in Kyoto
I am finally back in Kyoto after the intensive days in Biella, Italy. It's nice and strange to be back at the same time. Since I came back I have been meeting friends and talking about hanare's new direction, short and long terms, and my own path, which will be definitely influenced by my days in Biella. But first, by talking about what happened in Cittadellarte and thus organize my thoughts, I want to gradually shift a mode, from Biella to Kyoto. For that reason, we are hosting a party at hanare on Nov.3 in which I will give a small presentation accompanied by the salami I brought back from Italy. I will talk about my projects at UNIDEE and how it is going to realized in the future, and the program of University of Ideas and what Cittadellarte is all about from my personal perspective. Although the presentaion will be short, I am hoping to exchange ideas and thoughts on the vital issues we discussed during the residential program. For details, check our blog.
京都に辿りついた。かなり濃い日々が終わって京都に戻ってきてみると街は相変わらず静かで平和。久しぶりに友人に会い、今後のhanareについて、自分の方向性について考える日々が始まりました。まだ宙ぶらりんの感が拭えないけど、ちょっとづつビエラモードから左京区モードにシフトしていこうと思っています。というわけで、自分の頭を整理するためにも来週の月曜日に開催するはなれパーティーでプレゼンテーションができればと思っています。どういうプロジェクトをしてきて、それを今後どのようなカタチで発展させていくのか、そしてUNIDEEとは Cittadellarteとはなんやねん？ということを自分の経験に基づいてはなしたいと思っています。レジデンスの間に参加者と議論したアイデア、終わりなき問いについても、意見交換できたらと思っています。是非遊びにきてください。詳細はブログにて。
Notes from Biella vol.32
Ciao Biella!
The shampoo I brought from Kyoto is running out, and my lovely notebook I brought also is running out of pages. It's time to leave Biella. I don't usually believe in signs and whatever, but the shampoo and notebooks are good signs for me to move on. I experienced amazing days in Cittadellarte, learning, making friends, dancing, eating salami, drinking procecco. I also found the project with my new friends that I want to continue no matter what, and people I want to keep in touch. More than enough. Now I will fly back to Kyoto and start another journey, good and challenging one. Those who are in Kyoto area are welcomed to join our party dedicated to Biella on Nov. 3th with lots of Salami... and good conversations. See you soon!
日本から持って来たシャンプーとノートが丁度、本当に丁度なくなった。普段はサインとか星座とかそういうものにあんまり興味がないけれど、これは何らかのしるしかなと思っている。次に進むためのステップやね。というわけで、半年弱を過ごしたBiellaを後にして、京都市左京区に向かいます。Cittadellarte という場所で、勉強し、友達を作り、スパークリングワインとサラミを堪能し、なんとしてでも続けて行きたいプロジェクトも見つかった、思い残すこともあまりない。ここで得たエネルギー、知識、友情をまた違う場所で実らせていくのみ、というわけで１１月3日に京都周辺にいる方、ビエラに捧げるパーティーをはなれで開くので是非遊びに来てください。美味しいサラミを用意して待っています。久しぶりにみんなに会えるのを楽しみにしています。チャオビエッラ！
Notes from Biella vol.31
I went back to Venezia Tuesday and Wednesday, just because I was really impressed by Architecture Biennial's Italian Pavilion when I visited there before. There wasn't enough time last time, so I wanted to study all the projects at the pavilion as a student. And the weather there was so warm and kind, unlike Biella, which made my last remaining days in Europe perfect.
The curator of Italian Pavilion, Emiliano Gandolfi, who came to Cittadellarte a month ago, showcases many many socially and politically charged projects, telling us that as the title of the Biennial goes, "OUT THERE: Architecture Beyond Building," we can imagine more than just building a individual house or housing project. Through the projects, I saw his urgent feeling and responsibility as an architect that people in the field of Architecture and Urban Planning can do so much more, going to streets, communities, political conflicts with their in-depth knowledge in human life and a practical skill. The projects Emiliano chose were, while thoughtful and playful, committed to social issues that deal with challenges subverb cities face, Palestinian - Israel conflict, lack of public spaces and spontaneous acts in cities, commercialization, gentrifications in metropolitan areas. After seeing the Italian Pavilion, other pavilions seem so old-fashioned, and luck of urgency, which still seems to stick with a limited idea of Architecture, except the Brazilian pavilion that only shows "users point of views." It shows interviews of people's ideal and memorable places and houses in Stud Turkel style, without displaying any "architecture." The concept of going to micro and listening to what people who use buildings and city have to say, I thought, is genuine, and fun to read. Also interesting pavilion is a Venezuelan one. It was a complete propaganda of what the government has done to improve people's living, decreasing poverty, building museums and library etc... It was kind of funny to see the pure propaganda at the Biennal, but it is true that the pavilion also stands out from the atmosphere dominated by star architectural firms and chic, money making exhibitions.

火曜日から水曜日にかけて再び建築ビエンナーレを見にベネツィアに行って来た。日曜日に行った時、あまりにも時間がなかったのと、イタリア館のラインナップが凄くよかったので、やっぱりちゃんと勉強したいと思って。今回は泊まりがけでいったので時間の余裕もあり、個々の展示をしっかり見れた。前の記事にも書いたように、イタリア館が個人的には群を抜いて素晴らしかったと思う。今回のビエンナーレのタイトル、"OUT THERE: Architecture Beyond Building" がそのまま表現されていたように思う。家、共同住宅，住まいの提案という私たちが普段建築という言葉を聞いた時に思い浮かべるものではなく、私たちの社会が抱える問題（南北格差、国内格差、街の商業化、公共スペースの不在、郊外化、中東問題）に対して、建築という分野からどのような解決策を提示できるのか、真剣にそして遊びに溢れたアイデアで応えるアイデアに溢れていた。他のパビリオンと違い、世界中で実際に行われたプロジェクトの展示が多かったのもの特徴の１つ。イタリア館のキュレーターである、Emiliano Gandolfiさんの「建築、ビルとか建ててるだけではあかんやろ」っていう態度がしっかり伝わってきて、イタリア館（といっても世界中の建築家とアーティストによる展示構成）を見た後では、他のパビリオンが非常に物足りなかった。人間の生活に関する知識と実際的な技術、そしてビジュアル的な側面が組み合わされている建築という分野の素晴らしさ、可能性を十分見せてもらった感じ。'あと面白かったのがブラジル館。建築を作る側ではなく、使う側に焦点をあてた展示は、ブラジルのサンパウロに住む人々のインタビューを元に構成されていて、「どんな街に住みたいのか、今の街、生活をどう思うか、好きな街の想いで等々」という質問の答のみが展示されていて、"建築"は展示されていなかった。街に対するいろんな考え、希望を読む事ができて、こういうコンセプトを選んだブラジル館の頭の柔らかさに拍手。あと、面白かったのがベネズエラ館。チェベス率いる革命軍が政権を取って以来、人々の生活をどのように向上させて来たかを数値で展示していた。バリバリのプロパガンダが展示されていて暑苦しかったけど、グラマーで、チックで、超商業的なビエンナーレという場所では新鮮に見えたのも事実。

土曜日にフランスから三木ちゃんが来たので、Cittadellarteを見せる。相当感動した様子。やはり長くいると日常になってしまっている。１５人もの人を世界から４ヶ月も集めて、こんだけ盛りだくさんのプログラムを組めるのは凄い事。こうして集められた私たちが世界中に散らばっていって、それぞれの地域で、旅行先でアメーバみたいに繋がりながら活動を続けていくということに焦点を置いていることが、戦略的だと思う。長期的視野とはこういうこと。日曜日には一緒にベネツィアにいってきた。ベネツィアは今建築ビエンナーレが開催されていて、それが目的の一日旅行。９月にCittadellarteにレクチャーに来てくれたEmiliano Gandolfiさんがイタリア館のキュレターをしているのもあって、イタリア館をメインに鑑賞。先週に言った友達は彼からガイドをしてもらったとかで、行けば良かったと後悔しています。時間がないなかで、幾つかのプロジェクトを集中的に見るというよりも読んだ。アート然り、建築しかり言葉の重要性が益々増していて、言語が分からないと厳しいかも。その中でもJeanne van HeeswijkさんとDennis Kasporiのこれまでの活動を紹介した作品が好きだった。地域に超コミットとして建築というフィールドからの地域社会へのアプローチって、建築そのものが日常生活と隣り合わせなだけにダイレクトなのがいいと思った。こちらが予想していた以上に社会にとの関わりを検証し、これからの世界を想像し直す事ができる作品が多く、元気がでた。帰る前にもう一度見に行こうかとも思っている。後は、ボートで偶然一緒になったドイツ人のフィルムディレクターのおじさんが超親切で、街を案内してくれた上にお昼ご飯をごちそうしてくれた。何故にここまで優しいのか全然わからなかったけど、ラッキー。そして最後のどんでん返しもまっていて、最終の電車に乗り遅れてしまいノバラに住むフランチェスコ家に泊めてもらった。本当にみんな親切です。
