Abstract of Lecture

Prof. Mohammad Al-Saidi will try to explain how mathematics helped shape and structure the way human beings think, why mathematics has such a prominent role among other sciences, and what makes it such a fundamental and indispensable science.

He will do so by going back into history and survey some landmark moments in the history of the three major civilizations which shaped the world we live in today: The Greek civilization, the Arabo-Islamic civilization, and the Renaissance age in Europe. He will explain how the major mathematical ideas developed through these civilizations and how these ideas impacted science and human thought in general. In doing so Prof. Al Saidi will briefly describe the political and intellectual atmosphere during these civilizations in order to explain the context in which mathematics and science evolved. Al-Saidi will pay very close attention to the deep relationship between the development of mathematics and philosophy throughout history. Finally, I will discuss some of the present and future perspectives of mathematics.
