Tonight we had a special geust, Mizuki Endo, who is a director of AURCUS project and independent curator. We prepared a special rice-ball menu to welcome his arrival to our Sakyo-district. Having initiated to create many alternative art spaces not just in Japan but in Philippine and Indonesia, Mizuki aims to showcase creativity that is born in a specific place while also experimenting a format of the space that best fits into the local region. What makes his activity so special/unique is his ability to go back and forth, local to global and global to local, really horizontally. We are thinking about a possibility of collaborating in the future. We''ll see what happens.

Black Market

My friend emailed me this info that the project called, "Blackmarket" was organized in Liverpool on Nov. 29th. I first found out about this project during the residential program in Italy through Judith, who works at Arte Ufficio @ Cittadellarte. I remembered that I was really excited about this, and eventually borrowed its idea for our first public event, "Experitivo" in which the residents of UNIDEE presented ouselves as experts in the fields we are good at and exchanged our expertise with customers at Cafe Teatro-Sociale in Biella. Besides that we wanted introduce ourselves to people in Biella, I personally wanted to think about the value of non-institutional, informal way of learning/teaching, and a learning/teaching itself as a collective experience, implications of heavily "expert" oriented society. I like that Blackmarket offers a collective learning experience as a performative piece, yet, my impression is that (correct me if I am wrong) the experts of Blackmarkets are real experts and those who participate in the project seem to be limited to an art/culture crowd. I think, it would add another layer if the project include "everyday people" who happened to have crazy/weird/beautiful/usuful ideas and skills that are not necessary valued as expertise by our society. If I do this project, do I choose a different type of location to really deliver information or skill to those who need it, do I want to organize in the context of Art? I have to think about it. Having said that though, I still want to participate in a upcoming one if I have a chance.  Here you can see what it is like:

In Liverpool the Blackmarket theme deals with the relationship between human being and its material world in the moment when things lose their form, deteriorate, rot, explode, slides into decay and remembrance and forgetting lose their distinction. In our economy of waste, garbage is the repressed side of consumption, whilst non- biodegradable, radioactive toxins have made waste an ecological survival problem. In response to this we have developed a range of methods to stabilise waste, such as recycling, burning, conserving or archiving. 50 experts recruited from Liverpool, including an archeologist, a garbologist, psychoanalyst, freegan, entomologist, politician, architect, and activist will put together a lexicon that fragments, mirrors and hallucinates the theme of waste - through stories, theories, documentation and myths.
